On May 8, 1319, the Norwegian King Haakon dies and Erik’s son Magnus, with whom he shares with the Norwegian princess, becomes king of Norway at only three years of age. He also becomes king of Sweden, as King Birger has been expelled from the country. With guardians in Sweden and Norway and his mother, the Norwegian princess Ingeborg, 3-year-old Magnus is now moving in here at Bohus Castle.
The years go by and in 1331, all the nobles and great men in Norway gather here at Bohus and declare the then 13-year-old Magnus of age. Magnus now gets the formal government power and Bohus Castle becomes his main residence.
Now we stand in the inner gate building which is one of the oldest buildings on the fortress. It dates back to 14th century and is probably one of the first buildings built here in Bohus in stone. It is probably above where King Magnus lived during his reign at Bohus.
If you look at old drawings from the 16th century, you can see that it was a tall and narrow building with four floors. Next to the entrance inside of the wind bridge, the remains of a staircase can be seen leading up to the various floors. If you listen carefully, you can hear the steps from kings queens and other nice people on the way up the stairs to visit the King’s Halls here at Bohus.
