Here on the other end of the pond lies the so-called Russian Vault, which was built in the early 18th century. During the great Nordic war, fought between Charles XII’s Sweden and Russia, Denmark and Poland, Charles XII’s army took thousands of prisoners of war, hence the name Russian Vault.
Thousands more prisoners were forced to stay up to 20 years in Sweden. Some of these prisoners of war are held captive here at Bohus and are forced to work at the fortress by breaking stones, repairing walls, emptying latrines and similar chores. In Ryssvalvet (Russian Vault) there are two floors and in order to heat them, two fireplaces were used on each floor. The building is also believed to have periodically served as housing for soldiers and other crews.
